So it is that time of year you know the wonderful warm holiday season where we get to spend time with our family and friends. That warm magical season of peace and happiness....
Right.
Or maybe it is the season that we need a couple more of these
Yes folks this one is a showstopper!
To infuse the Vodka start like you would with cranberries
1/2 bag of fresh cranberries
1/2 cup of brown sugar
a little bit of water (just to get the cranberries going)
1 bottle of vodka
Put your cranberries, brown sugar and splash of water into a sauce pan and heat. You want to cook them about half as much as you do for cranberry sauce, so remove from heat when some but not all cranberries have popped.
Pour all the cooked cranberries into a large mouthed jar then add a bottle of vodka. Here comes the hard part... set it on the counter for about a week. After the 6-7 days poor through a cheese cloth lined strainer then put it into a bottle, I have been keeping it in the freezer.
To mix this drink pour about 3-4 oz of cranberry vodka into a shaker, top with about a Tablespoon of orange simple syrup and shake. Strain into a martini glass, this guy is garnished with candied orange peels. Altogether an great drink and it should take the edge off of any family gathering.
Maybe after one more I will be ready to put those annoying lawn ornaments outside

Happy Thanksgiving!
I usually end up working on Thanksgiving, which means that my first alarm (I am a snoozer) goes off at 3:07 then I trudge off to work after my 40 minute commute into Chicago. Since I like to cook I am still making Dinner, obviously some of the traditional items are off the table... no turkey, which is fine we haven't had that in a couple of years. I have also been doing some little things throughout the week so I am not making everything at the last minute. One of the things that I have made already is my cranberries. They sit happily in the bottom of my fridge, untouched... well maybe a couple of bites smaller... waiting for the big meal.
I have seen a couple of recipes for Bourbon and Cranberries floating around this season (here is one) which is the way I usually make mine (this is last year's) but I ran into a problem this year. I didn't really notice it until I was getting my ingredients together, it seems that my bourbon met up with some sweet vermouth and ended up mixed with ice instead of cranberries. So with a quick change of ingredients I am making something completely new Cranberry Sauce with vodka. Maybe to be all fancy I should call them Cosmopolitan Cranberries... then again maybe not.
The process couldn't be easier...
12 oz package of fresh cranberries
Grated peel of one orange
Juice from the same orange
1 Cup sugar
3/4 Cup Vodka
Splash of Triple Sec
A sprinkle of ground cinnamon (I would guess about a 1/4 tsp)
Put all of the ingredients together in a 2 quart sauce pan and cook until the sugar is blended and the cranberries have popped. I had it on kind of low heat because I was doing other things around the kitchen and could watch my pan so this cooked for about 20-25 minutes. When it is all done pour it into your serving dish, cover and cool over night.
One additional note here, I have often heard people say that they have, "cooked all the alcohol out of a dish." Where I don't always believe that is 100% true a lot of food that is made with wine or booze is fine for the kiddos. This one is not! It isn't appropriate for your friend after his AA meeting or your kids. Depending on the rest of your family's kids you might want to slip one of them ashot bowl.

Thanksgiving at our house pt 2
After dinner we went back to the pool, that is the way to spend a holiday, it only would have been better with a pool side bar. We live near Schaumburg IL, a Chicago suburb and maybe the shopping capitol of the Midwest. Schaumburg's website boasts 92,000,000 square feet of shopping space. I was surprised by how many people we met at the hotel that were traveling the area to start their Christmas Shopping. There were a couple of families here from Indiana to "get the door buster deals" and another family that was going to the American Girl Place down town. More power to them, I just want to avoid the malls and shopping centers today.
Anyway this mindless rambling isn't what this post is about I wanted to brag about the Cranberries I made for Wednesday's non Thanksgiving dinner. I will post or link this around Christmas too since no one will eat the sour little fruit between now and then.
Brown Sugar Bourbon Cranberry Sauce:
1 12 oz Package of Fresh Cranberries
1 tsp grated Orange Peel
1 Cup lightly packed Brown Sugar
Juice from one Orange
3/4 cup Bourbon
Splash of Triple Sec
Cook all ingredients together at a very light simmer for about 15 minutes stirring often until cranberries have popped and sugars break down. Put in the refrigerator uncovered for at least a couple of hours or overnight. The slow simmering does remove some of the alcohol but by no means does it come even close to evaporating so this is not the dish for your kids (though you may want to give some to your cousin's brats) or recovering alcoholics. However once you taste it you won't want to share anyway. The leftovers are all that I am planning to have for dinner tonight. By the way we were still haveing fun with the flowers.
